A new pizzeria spins dough to create classic and specialty favorites in Old Town Saginaw.
After Chris Chatin and Yuli Ward graduated from college with criminal justice degrees, the obvious next step for them was to open a pizza place. “We just couldn’t find good pizza in town. It’s pretty much a sea of chains, so we decided to take matters into our own hands,” Chatin explains. The partners got started perfecting their pizza recipe, and Old Town Pizzeria was born.
The pair started their business in a friend’s party store with the goal of moving to Old Town Saginaw as soon as a suitable storefront could be found. They were in the store for about a year while renovating their current space in Old Town. The grand opening of the location was held last February.
Chatin and Ward designed the restaurant to fit the personality of Old Town, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere to welcome everyone. “We have been overwhelmed with the response so far,” says Chatin. “It’s been busy, and we’ve had many guests say that they traveled from surrounding towns just to come to our restaurant.”
Old Town Pizzeria focuses on classic combinations with a few specialty recipes offered daily. The star of each of the pizzas is the crust, an original recipe that yields a crispy outside and chewy inside, similar to sourdough bread. The pies are cooked in an electric brick oven, which gives the finished product a distinctive texture.
Chatin notes, “We make our dough and sauce every day, and every ingredient we use on our pizzas comes in fresh each day. We don’t own a freezer. It makes for more hectic mornings, but it’s worth it to offer guests the best pizza possible.”
The menu has a simple and affordable pricing structure. Slices—hot and ready to go from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. —are one for $3 or two for $5, and an entire pie is $15. Also on the menu is the pizza muffin, made of pizza dough and traditional pizza toppings, along with breadsticks, calzones, and more.
