Celebrating Women in Business

Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but she did it backward and in high heels.

It’s a well-worn and tired line, but it’s an expression that still has some ties to truth today. A 2018 study from the Pew Research Center found that, of the 4,587 people surveyed, nearly two-thirds responded that women in leadership positions must do more to prove themselves than men, and half of the respondents cited gender discrimination faced by women.

Those responses may not come as a surprise to many, especially women. However, the same study also made a note of some striking statistics when it comes to women leaders.

  • 61% of respondents felt women leaders in the political world were more compassionate and empathetic.
  • Almost 33% deemed women leaders in politics to be more ethical than male counterparts.
  • 43% reported that women in business were better at creating a safe and respectful workplace.
  • 35% felt women were more apt at valuing diversity in the staff.

There’s plenty of positives in those numbers, which is why we’re celebrating women business leaders and independent entrepreneurs in this issue of Great Lakes Bay Business Magazine. Our region is bolstered by the presence and spirit of strong women taking the reins in the business world and putting a shoulder to the wheel in order to push the area’s economic footing forward. In the pages inside, we’ve highlighted a number of prominent local women who have made progress and found success in a variety of avenues in the business world.

For those who are just putting their first foot forward, Kristi L. Kozubal, regional director of the Michigan Small Business Development Center for the Great Lakes Bay Region at Delta College, and Erin Strang, president and CEO of the Central Michigan University Research Corp., explain how their organizations help new entrepreneurs get off the ground.

The Great Lakes Bay Region offers plenty of opportunities to empower and inspire women to reach success in both the personal and professional level.

No more operating backward and in high heels. It’s our time to take the lead.
