‘We help make things right after the worst day in a person’s life’
There’s a calm confidence that surrounds Jami Kelly, vice president of commercial lines for Frankenmuth Insurance. It’s a demeanor she’s forged over a 41-year career in the insurance industry that started in Fort Wayne, Indiana, before coming to Frankenmuth Insurance in 1981.
In her role, Kelly manages more than half of all Frankenmuth Insurance business and leads critical activities such as agency management, underwriting, premium audit, loss control and policy administration. Kelly has always had a passion for helping people. As she reflects upon her career, she recognizes that “insurance is the best industry I can be in to help people.”
“We help make things right after the worst day in a person’s life,” Kelly says. “The work we do at Frankenmuth Insurance impacts people, from business owners to employees and their families to local communities. By providing solutions to protect businesses’ assets, we are helping safeguard their futures and giving peace of mind.”
As the first female executive of the company, she certainly can be called a trailblazer. Kelly climbed through the ranks starting as an underwriter and advancing through various management roles to her current position as vice president. She serves as a role model and mentor for other women at the company.
“Jami’s knowledge of the industry and support of women who work with her present a special combination,” says Pam Weiss, Frankenmuth Insurance commercial lines underwriting supervisor. “I can rely on her for insights about industry practices, and I draw inspiration from her dedication to supporting other women in our company.”
While Kelly’s dedication to helping people has guided her career, continuing her education has helped to advance it. Holding several industry designations in underwriting, risk management and reinsurance, Kelly pursued advanced studies to build a broad knowledge of the insurance business and become a valuable resource for agents and co-workers.
“The insurance industry is dynamic and always evolving to meet new business innovations. I chose to continue my education so I would always have up-to-date and relevant knowledge on which to base business decisions,” Kelly states. “Every day I get to support the success of our commercial team. I see how dedicated, collaborative and caring Frankenmuth Insurance team members are. This is how I know our ‘neighbor helping neighbor’ value holds true after 150 years in business.”
Kelly is also a strong supporter of Great Lakes Bay Region development. She is a member of the Frankenmuth Noon Rotary Club and has served on boards for the Great Lakes Bay Region Red Cross, Saginaw Bay Yacht Club and Frankenmuth Chamber of Commerce. In addition, she was chairperson for the Michigan Basic Board of Governors.
