New Year’s Resolution Countdown

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day come with many traditional festivities and activities, including making resolutions. According to the History Channel, the act of making these promises at the start of the new year likely began with the Babylonians, who would make pledges to their gods to earn good favor and start the first day of the calendar off on the right foot.

For many of us, resolution-making comes along with disappointment in not following through with what we’ve decided to do to improve ourselves. You might have made resolutions to lose weight, eat healthier, volunteer more, or, in general, become a better person. Sometimes, our resolutions are so lofty or difficult to tackle that we might not even get started … or we break the promise quickly.

But what if we focus our resolutions on learning to do something that we’ve always wanted to do? It just might make us more successful all year long, finally following through with what we’ve decided to do.

Have you always wanted to play the guitar? Piano? Sax? Why not try it out this year at Herter Music Center in Bay City.

Still want getting fit at the top of your resolution list? Head over to the Saginaw Family YMCA and learn a new technique or activity to whip yourself into shape. You could try yoga, aerobics, or even swimming.

Are you looking to broaden your knowledge through literature? Try joining the Books & Bites Club at the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library.

Remember those new paint brushes you bought yourself but never opened? Break them out during an art class at Art Reach of Mid Michigan.

Whether it’s learning to cook, taking voice lessons, slapping on some snowshoes, giving up a bad habit, or finding the perfect diet, you won’t have far to look to find the right place to help you keep your resolution going strong all year.

New Year’s Eve is just around the corner. What resolutions will you make when the ball drops?
