Despite a rough time anticipating the changes to come from the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by the devastating flooding in Midland and Sanford, Great Lakes Bay Magazine is finding reasons to celebrate the region in the month of July. We are resilient, we are strong and we are proud of the efforts our business leaders have put into making their comebacks. The Great Lakes Bay Magazine editorial staff asked some of our local leaders why they believe the region is such a great place to live, work and play.
Jamie Furbush
President and CEO of the Frankenmuth Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors Bureau
“One of the best things about living in the Great Lakes Bay Region is our phenomenal business community who are always there to support the residents, visitors and one another. The number of small businesses that have stepped up during this time to help, whether it’s donating masks, shifting their production to make face shields for essential workers or volunteering their time and money creates a sense of pride and makes me feel so lucky to live and work in our region.”
Mark Flegenheimer
President and CEP of the Michigan Sugar Co.
“Michigan Sugar Co. has called the Great Lakes Bay Region home since 1906. While we’ve seen it change and grow, some things have remained constant: our incredible natural resources and opportunities for recreation, our gateway to both the serenity of the north and the hustle and bustle of our major cities to the south, and the hardworking people who serve as the backbone of our business community while living with a spirit of generosity.”
Mark Bassett
Chairman and CEO of Hemlock Semiconductor operations
“The Great Lakes Bay Region is filled with proud, hardworking people from all walks of life. Neighbors have shown time and time again that they’re willing to step up to support each other in times of need. Our communities offer parks, museums and places to gather, enjoy the outdoors, soak in the beauty of our area and make a living on a farm, in a factory or at a business. We’re strong, no matter the challenge.”
