October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

The ASPCA sponsors Adopt a Shelter Dog Month to create awareness and education about shelter dogs and encourages families to adopt from shelters.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, around 3.3 million dogs enter shelters every year.

Oftentimes, these canines are left behind and abandoned because of behavior issues, illness or unforeseen expenses.

The ASPCA sponsors Adopt a Shelter Dog Month to create awareness and education about shelter dogs and encourages families to adopt from shelters.

How do you observe if you don’t currently have room for a four-legged friend?

  • Volunteer your time at a local shelter.
  • Donate money or items to your local shelter.
  • Share your love and knowledge of shelter dogs with your friends.

There are so many reasons shelter dogs make great pets:

  • Adopting helps lower overpopulation and lower the number of euthanizations.
  • You’re paying less and often the dogs will have had great care by the facility you adopt them from, including spaying or neutering.
  • By supporting rescues and shelters, you are not supporting puppy mills.
  • You get the privilege and honor of saving a life.

If you’re torn, just walk through a local shelter or humane society. See if you make a connection with a dog. It could change your life, and it most certainly change hers or his.
